Repeat Repeat

About a month ago, we started listening to the NPR podcast Wow in the World. It's made car and train rides a lot more fun. (I came across it on this excellent list of podcasts for kids.) The kids dance to the theme song and laugh hard when Mindy eats too much chocolate. I've been surprised by scientific observations they mention in passing days later.

As soon as we finished listening to our first ever episode (it was the one about two-headed space worms), Netta (age 4) asked to listen to it again. We continue to listen to new episodes and re-listen to old episodes.

Netta intuitively knew she needed to hear the podcast again to understand and learn better. Daphne has been really into the Magic School Bus books the past few months. We read the The Magic School Bus at the Waterworks every day for a solid month. Then we moved on to The Magic School Bus Inside the Earth. Most recently, we've been reading The Magic School Bus and the Electric Field Trip almost every evening before bed.

As an adult, I crave novelty and rarely re-read or re-listen to books, articles or podcasts. It's not intuitive for me to incorporate it into our days, but my kids certainly understand the value of repetition for learning.
